About this collection

The E. E. Brown Photograph Collection contains photographs taken by Edward Elmer Brown, a photographer hired by the Western North Carolina Railroad to take photographs in the early 1880s. The photographs in this collection were scanned from his private photo album, which was donated to Special Collections at UNC Asheville by his granddaugher, Eleanore Brown, in 2014. The photographs date from the early 1880s and include many scenes of the railroad, the French Broad and Swannanoa Rivers, various Asheville scenes, and other Western North Carolina landscapes. Brown settled in Asheville and ran a photography business with Thomas H. Lindsey in the early 1890s.
