About this collection

Western North Carolina native Homer Clontz was stationed on the USS Intrepid during World War II where he served as a photographer. His photographs document fierce combat between US warships and Japanese planes in the Pacific theater, including kamikaze strikes on the USS Intrepid. The collection also includes reconniaissance photographs, Admiral Nimitz signing the peace treaty, aircraft, and Pacific island scenes.
